At Eastern Hancock, we believe every student deserves an educational experience that helps them discover their passions, pursue their goals and prepares them for a successful future. For high school junior Silas Fredenburg, that means finding a way to balance academics, agriculture, and extraordinary opportunities beyond the classroom.

Silas, an Eastern Hancock student, recently shared his unique educational journey at the Indiana GPS: A Shared Vision, A Brighter Future panel during the Full Scale Educational Symposium at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. Speaking before an audience of education leaders and stakeholders, Silas offered a student perspective on how flexible learning opportunities can help young people pursue their interests while continuing their education.

As a student in Eastern Hancock's EH At Home program, Silas follows a hybrid learning schedule that allows him to attend classes in person three days a week while completing additional coursework remotely on Wednesdays and Fridays. This flexibility gives him valuable time to work on the family farm and remain actively involved in FFA and 4-H.

For Silas, agriculture isn't simply an extracurricular activity. It's an important part of his education, his future and who he is.

His accomplishments extend well beyond the farm. In addition to sharing his experiences with education leaders, Silas has served as a student emcee at a state education gala and is preparing to compete in a national FFA competition in Denver in January 2027.

Creating Opportunities That Fit Our Students

Silas's story represents something we believe deeply at Eastern Hancock: education should create opportunities, not limit them.

Programs like EH At Home recognize that meaningful learning happens in many different environments. Whether students are pursuing agriculture, gaining work experience, exploring career interests, or preparing for college, our goal is to provide pathways that honor their individual strengths and aspirations.

We are proud of Silas, not only for his accomplishments but also for his willingness to share his story and help others understand what education can look like when schools embrace flexibility and innovation.

His journey is a wonderful example of what happens when students are given the opportunity to take ownership of their learning while remaining connected to a school community that supports their success.

Congratulations, Silas! Thank you for representing Eastern Hancock and reminding us why creating meaningful opportunities for every student matters.
